Traveling to Europe soon but don't know where to start? Let me help you with the first thing you need to process - Schengen Visa.

Does Schengen Visa cater to all European countries?

No, Schengen countries include Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. Countries not mentioned need a different visitor's visa.

Steps in Schengen Visa Application in the Philippines

  • Check out which Schengen visa type you need. Depending on the purpose of your visit to the Schengen Area, there are a few Schengen visa types for the Philippines traveling to Europe.

  • Figure out where to submit your Schengen visa application in the Philippines. Focus on the embassy/consulate/VAC of which country you need to apply, as well as under which jurisdiction you fall. (scroll down for all the schedule and contact details of the embassy/consulate/VAC)

  • Find the most appropriate time to apply for a Schengen visa in the Philippines (see the details below for each country of intent)

  • Gather the required Schengen visa documents for Filipinos.

  • Attend the interview on your appointment date.

  • Pay the visa fee. All Schengen states have specified and synchronized visa fees. (Scroll down to check the visa fee)

  • Wait for the processing of your visa.

What documents do I need for the application?

  • A Valid passport (minimum of 3 months after the expected visa stay with at least two (2) blank pages available)

  • Recent passport size colored photos - 2x2 inches (51 x 51 mm), printed on matte or glossy photo paper, in plain white or off-white background

  • Legal Residence Evidence (could be a national ID card for Philippine nationals or a Philippine residence permit for international)

  • Proof of Travel
    • Confirmed travel reservations (Round trip ticket reservations from the Philippines to Schengen country and back with specified entry and exit dates and flight numbers
    • Accommodation documents include places to stay in Europe, hotel booking, rental agreements, and a letter of invitation (if staying with someone from that country).
    • Europe Travel Health Insurance is needed to prove eligibility for getting a visa. It should have coverage of at least €30,000 for medical emergencies and repatriation in case of death.

  • Proof of Subsistence. This provides the financial means to support your stay in Schengen countries.

  • Cover letter to specify why you want to visit the Schengen Area, which of the member states you wish to travel to, the specific days you will be spending in the territory, and other details of your trip. Have a hard time? Check some samples here.

    • Employment contract.
    • Current bank statement of the latest six (6) months.
    • Leave permission from the employer.

    • Spouse's valid passport.
    • An official marriage certificate.

Depending on the Schengen visa type you are applying for in the Philippines, you will have to submit additional documents to support your purpose of entry into the Schengen Area in Europe.

Once the Schengen visa is approved

If the Embassy of the country you wish to visit in the Philippines approves your application, you will get your visa in the form of a sticker affixed to your passport. Ensure you read the visa sticker carefully to know the period you are permitted to stay in Europe. Take note that overstaying your Schengen Area visa has consequences.

If Rejected

If your application is denied, you will also receive a reason for this decision. Read this reason carefully! You can always appeal the decision if you think you have been rejected by mistake. However, if the Embassy justified the decision, reapply by correcting the mistakes made in the prior application.

How to figure out where to apply for a Schengen visa?

The three following factors are determinative on where you should file your Schengen visa application:

  • The number of countries you will be visiting
  • The number of days you will be spending in each
  • The country where you will step in first, in case you visit more than one of the Schengen member states

After having clear three factors given above, then you will be able to decide where to apply, according to the following rules:

  • If you are planning to visit only one country – then you need to apply at the diplomatic representation of the Schengen you will be visiting, located in your country of residence.
  • If you are planning to visit more than one country – then where you need to apply depends on the number of days you will be spending in each of the states you will be staying.
    • When spending an equal amount of days in each – then you need to apply at the diplomatic representation of the country where you will arrive first.
    • When spending an unequal amount of days in each – then you will need to apply at the diplomatic representation of the country where you will be spending more time.
